Conversion rate is the percentage of visitors who complete a goal, such as a sign-up, a purchase, or a form submission.
A conversion is whatever counts as success for a page: a sale, a booking, a newsletter sign-up, or a sent message. Conversion rate is conversions divided by visitors, times 100.
Conversion rate is not the same as click-through rate. CTR measures a click on a link. Conversion rate measures the action that the click was meant to lead to.
Small changes can move it: a shorter form, a clearer button label, or one fewer step between the click and the goal.
Example
A freelancer's contact form gets 500 views in a month and 25 messages. The form's conversion rate is 5%.
