Bounce rate is the percentage of visits where a person leaves a site without a second page view or any other interaction.
Older analytics tools counted a bounce as a visit with one page view. Google Analytics 4 changed the definition: a bounce is a session that is not engaged, which means it lasted 10 seconds or less, had no key event, and had only one page view.
A high bounce rate is not always bad. On a link-in-bio page, a visitor who taps one link and leaves did what the page is for. The click matters more than a second page view.
Read bounce rate together with clicks. A page with many views, few clicks, and a high bounce rate likely has unclear links or loads too slowly.
Example
A shop's sale page has an 80% bounce rate on phones and 40% on desktop. The team finds that a large image makes the phone version slow to load.
In pageo
pageo analytics focuses on views and link clicks, which show whether visitors act on your page. On Pro you can also connect Google Analytics 4 and read bounce rate there.
