A meta description is an HTML tag that sums up a page in a sentence or two. Search engines may show it under the title in results.
The tag sits in the page's HTML head as <meta name="description">. It does not show on the page itself. It is written for search engines and for the apps that build link previews.
Google does not always use it. When another part of the page matches a search better, Google writes its own snippet from the page text. A clear, accurate description still makes it more likely to be used.
Search results cut long descriptions, so the important words go first. Around 150 characters is a common target, but there is no fixed limit.
Example
A photographer's page description reads "Wedding and portrait photographer in Lisbon. See recent work, prices, and open dates." It names the service, the place, and what a visitor can do.
In pageo
