Double opt-in is a sign-up process where a new subscriber confirms their email address, with a link or a code, before they join a list.
With single opt-in, anyone who types an address joins the list. With double opt-in, the service sends a confirmation email first, and the address joins only after its owner clicks a link or enters a code.
The extra step keeps typos, fake addresses, and sign-ups made in someone else's name off the list. It also gives you a record that the person agreed.
Some people do not finish the second step, so double opt-in lists grow a little slower. In exchange, more of the list is real people who want your email.
Example
A visitor types their email into a newsletter form. A six-digit code arrives in their inbox, they enter it on the page, and only then are they subscribed.
In pageo
pageo uses double opt-in for every subscriber. Visitors get a six-digit code by email and enter it to confirm, and only confirmed addresses join your list.
