A QR code is a square barcode that stores text, usually a URL. A phone camera reads it and opens the link without any typing.
QR stands for Quick Response. Denso Wave, a Japanese company, invented the format in 1994 to track car parts. Phone cameras now read QR codes without a separate app.
A QR code can hold a URL directly, which makes it a static code, or a short redirect address that a service can change later, which makes it a dynamic code. A static code works as long as its link works, and it needs no account.
QR codes have error correction built in, so a code still scans when part of it is covered, for example by a logo in the middle.
Example
A speaker puts a QR code on the last slide of a talk. People in the audience scan it and land on the speaker's page with the slides and a contact form.
